MyRange

Get back in control of your hearing

AudioNova is a fast growing international service network of hearing care providers. They came to Soda studio with an idea for a new product. A mobile application that would get users of hearing aids, back in control of their hearing. We helped them design this app from scratch.

Some quick details

•   Client: AudioNova
•   Project length: 7 weeks
•   Methods: UX design for iOS and Android, UX research

My role within this project

On behalf of Soda studio I worked on this project. I was responsible for the majority of the UX design for the mobile app. Together with Marianne Stigter I conducted the user research. Floris de Wit created the majority of the visual design for this project.

The challenge

The number one challenge was to create a great experience of linking a mobile application to external hardware. The hardware being the hearing aids in this case. When working with bluetooth connections a lot of things can go wrong. So we had to design for every possible situation.

The main goal for this project

Design a mobile application that is a joy to use, and works flawlessly with the corresponding hearing aids.

A little bit about the process

Covering all scenario’s with an extensive flowchart

A key piece of the design process of this app was the flowchart. The app itself is quite basic in it’s functionality. The onboarding process on the other hand was very complex. To get a clear understanding of all of the scenarios that could take place when connecting the phone and hearing aids via bluetooth. An awesome flowchart was created. Covering all the happy and unhappy flows.

Getting feedback from potential users

From an early stage we tested the designs with potential end-users. Creating prototypes from wireframes and presenting them in interviews. Doing this helped us understand how the users felt about some of the key features and of course the overall product. It also shed light on some key usability issues, which we could then fix right away.

A quote of one of our respondents:
“The app brings hearing aids closer to a product that fits this day and age. Instead of feeling dusty and old, it makes it modern and a joy to use.”

A modern solution for hearing-impaired

Within The Netherlands there are an estimated 1.2 million hearing impaired people of 60 years and older. For these people, the best way to be able to hear better is by using hearing-aids. MyRange changes the way these people use their hearing aids by giving them control through their smartphone.

Get started in no-time

The smart onboarding process within the MyRange application helps you to easily connect your hearing aids with your smartphone. By guiding you through a step by step process you can start using the app and hearing aids in no-time.

Get in control!

The dashboard of MyRange is home to an overview of the most important settings and information about your hearing aids.

Battery status

Within the MyRange dashboard you can always check the battery status of your hearing aids. On top of this visual cue, you’ll also get a notification when it is really time to replace the batteries. This way you’ll never unexpectedly run out of battery again.

Audio profiles

Different environments call for different ways of enhancing the sound by your hearing aids. Using the build in audio profiles you can easily change the settings to fit the environment you’re currently in.

Volume and balance

Using the volume settings you can easily set the amount of amplification. Apart from the overall volume you can also change the volume of each individual ear. This way you’re able to find the perfect amplification for your specific needs.

Designed for Android and iOS

The app is designed with a consistent style and user experience in mind. This way the app feels as one and the same product on iOS as well as on Android devices. Although the apps feel the same way we implemented unique patterns for each platform. Whichever platform you use, the MyRange app will always feel familiar in it’s use.

Final result

The app is currently in development. When the first release will be finished I’ll update this post with a link to the app store.
